Episode 467 – How to Make an Unstoppable Career Change Without Losing Yourself with Nicole Pytel
What happens when the career you built changes, disappears, or no longer feels right?
I talk with content marketing leader Nicole Pytel about career change, burnout prevention, imposter syndrome, entrepreneurship, professional identity, and the growing role of AI in content marketing. Nicole shares how she moved from sports journalism into business, built her own agency, learned to shut work off, and later chose employment over entrepreneurship without seeing it as a step backward. We also explore what layoffs can teach us about identity, why confidence can exist beside fear, and how AI can support human skill instead of replacing it. Her story is a strong reminder to trust what you know, keep learning, and ask yourself one powerful question: Why not you?
Highlights:
21:44 – The turning point that pushed Nicole to leave television.
28:50 – Why never shutting off from work led to burnout.
39:34 – How confidence can exist alongside fear and imposter syndrome.
45:35 – What a layoff can reveal about professional identity and self-worth.
50:24 – Why AI still needs human judgment, strategy, and creativity.
1:00:24 – Why trusting your gut can make career change worth the risk.
About the Guest:
Nicole Pytel is a content marketing leader who’s spent her career translating complicated things into stories people actually want to hear — first from a newsroom, now from the executive table.
Her career started in TV news as a sports reporter, where she covered the legendary Friday night lights of high school football and spent her Saturdays on the sidelines of Texas A&M’s Kyle Field. She was eventually promoted to news anchor, and those days of turning complex topics into compelling stories still shape how she approaches content strategy today.
Nicole then spent nearly a decade as the founder of Premier Content Source, a content marketing agency she grew to serve over 1,000 clients across multiple industries. She later worked as an embedded content marketing expert inside teams at Google Cloud, Chrome Enterprise, and YouTube.
Most recently, Nicole served as Vice President of Content Marketing at Firebrand Communications, where she built the agency’s content marketing line of business from zero and held a seat on the executive leadership team.
Today, Nicole is focused on how AI is changing content marketing, building a four-chapter framework for how content teams should operate now that AI has fundamentally changed how buyers search, discover, and evaluate the companies they work with.
Whether it’s a thirty-second news segment or a company’s entire content strategy, Nicole’s guiding belief hasn’t changed: if you can’t make the audience care, you’re just making noise.
