Braille Literacy and the National Federation of the Blind

In November, 2008 Michael Hingson was appointed as an ambassador for the Braille Literacy initiatives of the National Federation of the Blind Michael Hingson to Serve as National Ambassador for Braille Literacy. The literacy rate today among blind persons in the United States is horribly low. Braille equips the blind with literacy in the exact same manner that print empowers the sighted. Yet, today fewer than 10 percent of blind children are learning Braille.

You can learn more about this staggering problem as well as how you can get involved and help by visiting www.braille.org
. You are especially encouraged to register for and purchase a Braille Commemorative Coin issued by the United States government in honor of the 200th birthday of Louis Braille on January 4, 2009. Proceeds of this coin will be used to fight the battle against the extremely low literacy rate of blind people in America.
